HouseMart Ace Hardware

Post by Super S »

Stopped in my local Ace Hardware store in Longview, WA the other day for something only to discover that the location is quietly closing down. They supposedly are closing by the end of May, and many shelves are already empty. However, there are no closing signs posted, and no advertisements that I have seen.

This location was downsized considerably several years back, as a new Office Depot location took over much of the space. The building is a former Ernst Hardware, which Ace previously occupied approximately 2/3 of. After Ace opened, Longview gained a Home Depot as well as a Lowe's, and increased competition may have been a factor. Ace's prices have always been on the high side, but more recently have improved a little.

At some point in recent years, the store was taken over by a company based in Hawaii called HouseMart, which operates Ace stores in Hawaii, Las Vegas, and several towns in the Pacific Northwest. They also operate Ben Franklin stores in Hawaii. Their website http://hmstores.com/ really leaves a lot to be desired and does not appear to have been updated in quite some time.

I am curious if this is an isolated closure, or if they are closing any other locations.

The Triangle Center was recently advertised as being on the market, and perhaps a new tenant is lined up, but there are other vacancies so it's hard to say why they are closing.

Finally an article about it:

Misleading on two counts. First, the article makes it sound as if Ace actually owns this location, even though the picture clearly shows the HouseMart sign. Second, this location did not move out of the Ernst building, it consolidated into a smaller space. (It previously had the existing space, plus the part where Office Depot is now)

It still doesn't really explain why this location is closing though.

And a second article from the same paper with more accurate info, which at least tells more about why this location is closing.:
