The company is planning to open about half a dozen 10,000 square foot stores this holiday season along with an ecommerce website. The new stores will include other amenities such as play areas.

Is there an article on this yet? And are these stores seasonal only, or permanent?

Bloomberg reported it. The plans are not official but the executive from TRU kids says they are planning to open. They did not say whether or not they are permanent, but if they have play areas they could be long term stores.

It could be a good idea as these smaller stores could be cheaper to run and more profitable. A seasonal store could also be good as most toy sales are during the holidays.

Let's call this what it really is: A company using the Toys "r" Us name is opening new, smaller stores that probably won't be anything like the old company.
