Re: New self checkouts at Home Depot

I was in my local Home Depot tonight. They have not only installed these new self-checkouts, but have also installed all new regular checkstands at the lumber end as well as the main checkout area. The regular ones are interesting in that they have the register keyboard and cash drawer facing outward, and are basically an open counter similar to the self checkouts. A few things struck me, the main one being that it would look relatively easy to convert any and/or all of them to self-checkout in the future, and it also makes the cashier more vulnerable with the cash register and drawer in plain sight. But one positive I could see is that they seem better suited for lumber and other large items, and if using a wireless scan gun, it is possible to scan items while leaving them in the cart.

It was slow in there tonight, so I can't really say if this new setup makes it any faster.
