Spur gas stations?

Post by cjd »

A few miles from my house is a small Spur gas station and convenience store. I know they used to be a common name but I've never seen any others. As long as I remember it's been a Spur but it's not particularly old (I think 1990 or so).

Looks like they used to be part of Murphy Oil Co.

Isn't Murphy's corporate logo a spur?

It sure is. According to the history page of Murphy's website, they bought Spur in the 1950's and divested the stations in the 1990's. In 2011 they divested the Spur refinery and, according to this article in the Duluth News-Tribune the brand disappeared after the buyer was required to change the name post-purchase.

Just for fun, here's the story of the logo.
