Megaplex Theater in Salt Lake to get luxury renovation

In most circumstances something like this probably wouldn't be all that notable, but it's interesting to see someone making this kind of investment even in what may be one of the toughest times ever to be a theater operator, especially one that operates huge theaters like Megaplex that presumably need to draw pretty big crowds just to keep the lights on. Theaters in Utah have been open (at limited capacity) for a lot longer than they have in most places, and the Megaplex theaters are definitely a bit unusual compared to the standard Regal, Cinemark and AMC offerings (also a concept you'd have a really tough time making work anywhere but in Utah), but given the fact that many studios are now making movies available for streaming on release day, something like this seems like a pretty big gamble. Obviously at this point people expect that things will return to normal soon, but the proverbial genie has left the bottle on that one, which makes theaters a much less appealing proposition than they used to be, even before Covid.

After getting 2 COVID vaccinations, I feel much more comfortable going everywhere and going back to normal. However, there are not enough good movies in the theaters right now. Many of the theaters are closed. Hollywood needs to release more appealing movies if the cinemas are to survive.

I do think the delivery of movies is going to change going forward and these theaters are going to become fewer and fewer. The real nice ones with a lot of extras will make it. The plain ones with just basic features (like stadium seating, large snack bar, etc.) even if they are perfectly nice will not. It will be just like shopping malls. Those A malls are booming. Even B malls are struggling.

Also, while ground does not appear to be broken, the chain has stated earlier they are committed to opening a previously announced entirely new facility in Idaho Falls, Ida. The signs are still up.

May also vary from place to place. After all, with areas where people have had problems getting reliable enough service to do more important things like school classes or work from home virtually, it's probably not going to be easy to have movies from one of the streaming services either.
