Probably not much of a surprise looking at the condition of the store... 12th Street Store...

You aren't kidding! Reminds me of a few Ralphs stores in LA that ultimately closed.
It always cracks me up when Kroger posts pictures of a palatial store and actual customers' pictures are quite different. In this case, Kroger posted exterior shots of two different stores.

Kroger #995 is showing its age. If is has been losing money, it has no need for improvements.

This store is Kroger's last Family Center that is still open in the state. It's around 50 years old. Its time has come and gone; the neighborhood around it has declined. I wish that they'd rebuild, though, since this will leave only the new Kroger on the south side and the Suplhur store in this part of the state.

There is a
Jewel-Osco at the Harlem/Foster shopping center in Chicago that dates back to 1970. It was originally a Jewel-TurnStyle (TurnStyle was a discount department store much like today's Target) that replaced one that burned in 1969. The structure has not changed much since the TurnStyle closed in 1978 or so, save for two facade changes, both made within the last ten years. However, the store has been remodeled several times and is well-kept. You would never know it is 49 years old. Sounds like Kroger could take a page out of the Jewel playbook when it comes to store upkeep.

Kroger still runs 6 Family Center stores (all massively upgraded) in Orange, Baytown, Nacogdoches, Longview, Marshall and Paris TX. This store was the anomaly, as it was the most neglected. Longview seems to get the most attention, and it's the busiest. This store still sports its original layout, including the Deli and Bakery.

That's good to hear. There are some Ralphs in SoCal and Fry's here in Phoenix where decor has been updated but the store still looks like it has not been kept up.
