Retail Watchers

According to the Business Journal, Harris Teeter will be temporarily closing their store at the 4101 Park Road (Park Road shopping center) for a remodel effective January 2020. Though the exterior received cosmetic updates in recent years, the store still had 1980s decor in a couple of places.

Another store in Charlotte will be closing outright. The standalone store at 2201 W T Harris Boulevard will be closing on or before January 5th 2020 according to their spokesperson. The store, which opened in 1994, has not been remodeled in the twenty-five years Harris Teeter has operated in this space.

This news comes just three weeks after they opened a replacement store for another 1990s Harris Teeter in Northwest Charlotte.

2201 W T Harris Boulevard is odd looking for a retail store. From the outside you would think it's just a Harris Teeter corporate office, and not an actual supermarket. Most stores will have some big facade that's easily identifiable, and draws people in.

It is very weird looking.

The Park Road store has been there since the center opened in 1956. It may be the only still-open location that made the full Colonial Stores > Big Star > Harris-Teeter transition, and the awkward expansions over the years are noticeable.

Almost looks like a small office building that was converted into a grocery store. Is that space to the left of the curved facade a parking garage or are those brick things just for effect.

The space to the left is not a parking garage. It looks like it’s a canopy for their Parcel Pick Up area.

Judging by interior pictures of the store, it looks as if the store itself is only one story (with maybe a second level for Employee Breakroom/Manager’s Office) but the Facade gives off the impression that the building is two or three stories high.

H-T really put up some interesting looking stores. They seemed to spare no expense, when it came to the looks of their stores, both inside and out.

The condition of that unremodeled 1992 store they are closing referenced above is surprising, it looks very well maintained. It looks dated, but it sure does not look run down.

That HT is in close proximity to 3 others. There comes a point where an area can become too saturated, and the profits being made aren't worth the extra overhead expenses. The fact that it's a stand-alone and not part of a shopping center limits the traffic it will bring in. HT is also a very prolific property developer, and their newer stores are part of larger PUD projects.

I wonder if another supermarket could be succeeding Harris Teeter #214. Publix does not have stores along West W. T. Harris Boulevard yet.
