Publix headed for Charlotte, NC?

Post by krogerclerk »

Publix is expected to build a store in Tega Cay, SC a Charlotte suburb just across the state line in York Co. This will be the first Publix/Harris-Teeter faceoff in Harris-Teeter's home market. Publix has met more success in markets outside Charlotte when the 2 chains have competed previously including Atlanta, Jacksonville, Nashville and several South Carolina markets. The two chains are upper mid-market and very similar in scope and appeal, so Harris-Teeter's entrenchment in the Charlotte market and North Carolina should fare better for them than with previous H-T vs Publix encounters.

Publix is opening a second store in in SC near Charlotte in Indian Land where Harris-Teeter is the closest competition. This store is in Lancaster County which as of the present isn't considered to be part of Charlotte's metro, but likely will be added based on the 2010 census when new metro figures and definitions are released around 2013.

I suspect Publix is testing the waters in South Carolina to see how they fare near H-T's home market before crossing the state line. With Delhaize converting Bloom to Food Lion and closing 1 Bloom, the upper market is going to be vunerable. Harris-Teeter seems to be focused on expanding in Washington DC so they could be pressed hard by Publix entering the region. Harris-Teeter has been closing stores in the more blue-collar areas of its market as well as it moves upscale. Harris-Teeter and Food Lion have a real estate advantage in Charlotte that may work to their favor, possibly making H-T a takeover target for Publix, which would in one fell swoop expand Publix from Rehoboth Beach, DE to Key West, FL.
