When did they last open a new store anywhere?
They built and opened an all-new store in New Orleans in 2013.

A similar store was opened in Covington in 2010, and another opened somewhere in Florida between the two. It's ironic that the division that's shrinking the most is the one that got 2/3 of the newest stores. Beyond that, the last store was opened in 1997.

From the article, "Hucker said there are no plans to close any more south Louisiana stores. There are now 14 Winn-Dixies in metro New Orleans and six in metro Baton Rouge."

So, there are only 20 stores left in the state. Do they still self-distribute?

The store built in 2013 looks nice:

Of course they don't plan to close any more. Any more and they'll have to just leave. Plus they sold all the real dogs to Brookshire and Shoppers Value Louisiana.

WD hasn't self distributed in a few years, having outsourced distribution to C&S, who operates a warehouse in Hammond that serves Louisiana.

Covington's store is quite similar, but with the slightly older decor package:

Southeastern Grocers opening additional stores anywhere is a pipe dream.

I will make realistic predictions. First, Southeastern Grocers will update stores, then sell those stores. Second, Southeastern Grocers will close more stores.

No truer words have been said. Bankruptcy or no bankruptcy, SEG does not have much longer unless if they can find a buyer willing to swoop in and throw a ton of capital into the stores to make them competitive.

What happened to that second round of closures they were going to do? They're not planning to just slap a new coat of paint on them as Harveys or Fresco y Mas and expect that to save them, right? Heck, the original closure list proved that wasn't the case.

The window for someone to buy the entirety of Southeastern Grocers has closed. Whoever wants to get into Southeastern Grocers' footprint and challenge Walmart, Kroger, and Publix will need to invest capital in constructing new stores.

Do we expect Southeastern Grocers to be around in five years?

The closing of additional stores is proceeding. I know several BI-LO stores that have leases expiring and are not being renewed.

If Southeastern Grocers wants to do its 100-store update, it will need to close stores and divert those expenses into other stores.

I have heard speculation Southeastern Grocers could announce another round of stores closing and/or being divested by November or by January.
