New Safeway in Queen Creek, AZ

Post by rwsandiego »

Phoenix Business Journal reports that that Safeway is opening a new 63K square foot store in Queen Creek. Queen Creek is in the Southeast Valley area of metro Phoenix. Will have to check the new store out this weekend.

I think it's fairly obvious at this point that the preferred store brand in Arizona at this point is Safeway, but this sounds a lot like a large-format Albertsons in Safeway duds, much like how the Randalls opened in Austin a few years ago was based after Albertsons' classic store layout rather than Safeway's.

It is on the small end of a suburban Jewel, but colossal by Safeway standards.

BTW, Safeway and Albertsons are running one combined ad insert in the Wed paper in Phoenix (and probably Tucson)...the same pricing for both chains, except club card is needed at Safeway. It is probably the indication that the Albertsons brand is going away in AZ.

It received the Florida décor package.

IMO the Florida package looks better with the faux wood floors than it does with polished concrete.

I'm not sure that this indicates anything at the moment.

They seem to be running a combined ad in Portland, Seattle, Las Vegas (with VONS instead of Safeway), Los Angeles (with VONS instead of Safeway), and San Diego (with VONS instead of Safeway).

I do agree that I think Albertsons is going away in AZ but they seem to be running the combined ad almost everywhere (except for Texas for some reason).

It seems to be a division by division thing at this point.

The bigger issue is banner conversions cost money... this is a company that needs to spend its money wisely at this point. They can do things like two banner ads and get an efficiency similar to if they had just a single banner, without having to pay for banner change costs. Especially as Interest rates keep going up, they need to spend their money wisely on remodels and some opportunistic new stores in growing areas in the near term in absence of Kroger development of new stores on the west coast.

I agree that banner changes are expensive, so why did they spend the money to convert my two nearest Pavilions to Vons?
