Nordstrom Overhead Paging

Post by omnisuperstore »

I’ve noticed that a few Nordstrom’s in the Chicago area have switched their Legacy microphone overhead paging over to the phone system paging via the Avaya phones. It’s obvious, the music stops, the associate says the announcement and then you hear a telephone system CO disconnect noise when they hang up.

Being a fan of PA systems in stores, I sent Nordstrom this suggestion a few years back, so they didn’t have to invest in two separate systems whe the Avaya system could do the paging. I think this also coincided with the rollout of the headsets radios. Overhead paging is still occasionally done because not everyone has a headset, but the need for a microphone system is done.

Any information on this will quench my curiosity.

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion, it's a pretty specific question, there's a good chance nobody active here has the answer right now.

I wonder if there is a difference in the Nordstrom vs. the Nordstrom Rack. I have not been into a location of either chain in at least a year.

A lot of people don't know the answer because they simply do not shop at Nordstrom. It's not exactly the type of store that you visit weekly either. Some stores make it a point to use overhead paging as little as possible, instead relying on pagers and other methods. Higher end department stores certainly fall in to this category.

Target used to discourage overhead paging. At one point, the store I worked at years ago allowed paging from any phone in the store, this was eventually disabled and the only areas where you could use the P.A. were the fitting rooms, upstairs office, and service desk. It made for some service issues because the pagers used back then had batteries which did not last long, and sometimes people would forget to take the pagers with them, accidentally took them home, or just forgot to turn them on. It was sometimes a hassle to ask somebody near the microphone to page somebody.

I shop at Nordstrom, but don't know the answer, hence I didn't post.

I wonder if that answers the question (no paging)?

I assumed the telephone system thing was a different kind of overhead paging.

I actually never heard paging at Old Orchard when it opened in the 1990's (I worked at Eddie Bauer and spent MANY a dinner/lunch break at the Nordstrom Cafe) and don't recall ever hearing it at North Bridge (Michigan Ave) when visiting.
