Raley's announces new Truckee store

This new 35,000 sq ft store is the 5th new Raley's store announced in the last year. Amazing for a 120 store company that was struggling just a few years ago. They really seem to be capitalizing off of Savemart's trouble and Safeway's fall from dominance. Also interesting that this is the first store Raley's has announced outside of the Sacramento area showing their commitment to Northern California (and Northern Nevada) as a whole rather than their home market. Will be interesting to see how this expansion pays off.

Yes, I love it too!

It seems to look much larger than it is.

What kind of town is Truckee?

The store looks somewhat upscale?

Truckee is a ski town based mainly around rich Sacramento and Bay Area residents owning second homes to enjoy Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, and Northstar which are three of Tahoe's most famous ski resorts. Raley's already has stores in Incline Village, Stateline, and South Lake Tahoe all of which are similar markets around Lake Tahoe. This particular location looks to be near the entrance of Martis Camp which is a development filled with many multi-million dollar ski in - ski out homes connecting to the Northstar Resort. Truckee currently has a very high volume SaveMart (outstanding location) and a decent Safeway.

As for the upscale look of this store, Raley's has gone very upscale lately as referenced by their new store design. These store designs are really costly though which seems to be the reason of their extremely slow rollout of this design.

Awesome interior and thanks!! :D

BTW.......I know most do not like the polished concrete floors for many valid reasons, but I love the look, especially this one!

This is excellent news. Truckee badly needed another store. Raleys (and Scolaris) both previously tried to get stores in Truckee but couldn't get approved. Raleys had actually planned to build two stores there in the past but neither ever happened. Truckee had a size cap on stores at 40,000 square feet and they both tried to exceed that cap. Now that this store is 35,000 square feet I wonder if they will get approved.

The Truckee Save Mart doesn't even do close to the business it did as a Lucky in the 90's, but does better than it did as Albertsons. High volume for Save Mart is having 3 or 4 registers open. The Save Mart typically stinks of fish but looks clean enough and is stocked well. The Truckee Safeway is an absolute mob scene store, way overcrowded, even with six self checkouts and 9 or so regular registers the store is often very crowded, despite typically having proper staffing and a very well stocked, well executed perimeter.

I expect this new Raleys will pick a lot of business off of Safeway but won't impact Save Mart much. But with as much business as that Safeway does, they can afford to lose some.

One other thing that may be in play when it comes to store designs is the local area and any rules they have set up.
Some areas like to do that to make shopping locations look more like they fit with the area (since if one looks this could be mistaken for a mansion type house rather than a commercial building).

More than that. Raley's had been trying to get into Truckee for the past 15 years. At one point they had two stores proposed. Both were well over Truckee's 39,999 square foot retail cap but at that point they somehow thought they were so "wanted" that they could get around it. Well, they didn't get around it.

But now their new stores are so much smaller than before that they fit into Truckee's retail store size cap.
