Where is it positioned at Gelson's? Don't they have cashier unload checkstands?

Is is positioned toward the scanner or down toward the bags?

Raleys has these cashier unload checkstands as well and usually the customer is standing down by the bagger (that is where the pinpad is), not in front of the cashier. It would almost seem like it should be positioned closer to the bagger.

I would guess that everyone will have them soon. Giant-Landover just installed them. Ditto Whole Foods.

I saw this at Safeway. It is not very big and while it protects the cashier from straight direct breathing as they are inputting things on the keyboard, it does not protect them while bagging, while getting the receipt off the printer, or from air coming at them from an angle (any angle) as the customer moves through the line.

Here is a photo of Dierbergs in St. Louis solution. Much more "protective." Even a little slot to put cash through.

Saw them at a local Hannaford earlier this morning. The question now becomes will these be temporary and be gone once the danger eventually passes or are they here to stay?

They will most likely be here forever. As long as humans still get colds and the flu, the cashier should get sneeze and cough protection. Sneeze guards are common at buffets and this will become an everyday thing. Perhaps they will make the glass cover more of the checkstand and make it look better.

I saw several Walmart pharmacies install them recently. The plexiglass installers said Walmart corporate wanted a plexiglass panel with 10 inches of opening at the bottom to pass prescriptions. This is kind of large and lets germs through. This is pretty useless since people can still cough and sneeze through that 10 inch slot. On the other hand, it is now very difficult for robbers to jump the counter and rob the pharmacy. Unless they are 10 inches thin and can slip through the gap like Lube Man from Watchmen.

It appears the Wal Mart version of this, is also much more protective and larger than some of what we are seeing the grocers install.

This photo appears to be from Canada though and slightly different checkout configuration (actually looks like what the US ones had before they went to stupid "circle of bags" set up).

Hard to say - the ones that were previously suggest for the pharmacies seemed to have more purposes than just stopping germ travel, and being they were in progress before this started, they are likely to be permanent.

The ones at checkout registers, however, could be just temporary (having seen a picture on the news of at least one locally that was attached to the counter with large spring clamps you'd normally use for holding together an item you had glued while it dried, that surely doesn't look permanent). Although they may decide that they are a good idea and put up better made and more permanent ones later on, once the current issues are past.

I don't see any problem with these being permanent. But there will need to be a cleaning process. The best process would be to somehow remove them every few hours and put them in a vat of steaming water and bleach. But I know that can't happen.
