Albertsons-Safeway Merger effect on Denver?

Post by klkla »

I was looking at market share data for the major cities where both Albertsons and Safeway currently both operate and was interested in everyone's opinion on what they think the market will look like after the merger. Which brand name will be kept? How many stores will be divested? E.T.C.

This thread is for the Denver area.

Current market share:
#1 - King Soopers (Kroger) 30.7%
#2 - Safeway 17%
#3 - Walmart 16.1%
#4 - Costco 9.6%
#5 - Target 6.6%
#6 - Whole Foods 4.9%
#7 - Sam's Club (WalMart) 4.0 %
#8 - Albertsons 2.3%

Combined market share 19.3%

Denver is loaded with very poorly performing Safeway Stores and numerous non-lifestyle stores. Albertsons few remaining stores are in good shape and good performers. Albertsons pricing is much lower than Safeway's in Denver, service is better, and quality is better. I guess it is easy when you've closed 75% of your stores in a market like Albertsons has in Denver, to have the best stores and the best employees left.
