Citing ongoing labor shortages, Target is going to pay starting wages as high as $24 an hour in some highly competitive markets.

That $24 an hour appears to be for corporate office jobs, not starting wages in any physical store.Brian Lutz wrote: ↑March 2nd, 2022, 6:53 pm https://www.kxxv.com/news/target-to-beg ... 15-j0NGX0o

The first two paragraphs of the article state the new rate will apply to store and distribution center workers in markets where labor is tight.storewanderer wrote: ↑March 3rd, 2022, 6:02 pmThat $24 an hour appears to be for corporate office jobs, not starting wages in any physical store.Brian Lutz wrote: ↑March 2nd, 2022, 6:53 pm https://www.kxxv.com/news/target-to-beg ... 15-j0NGX0o

"NEW YORK (AP) — Workers at Target stores and distribution centers in places like New York, where competition for finding and hiring staff is the fiercest, could see starting wages as high as $24 an hour this year.
The Minneapolis-based discount retailer said Monday that it will adopt minimum wages that range from $15 to $24 an hour, with the highest pay going to hires in the most competitive markets. It currently pays a universal starting wage of $15 an hour..."

Re: Target 2022
We will see what store locations are paying $24 an hour for a starting wage. I think that will only be for HQ.rwsandiego wrote: ↑March 4th, 2022, 8:45 pm

Also would like to see what the raise program will be for this new wage program they have announced. Someone who goes to a unionized grocer and gets to journeyman especially a department manager position would likely still do better.
I am hearing since this announcement that applications are flooding into Target. People think they will get $24 per hour. Imagine their surprise when they go in for an interview and get told it will only be $15 per hour since the $24 per hour is for the corporate office or maybe a few experienced hires like an executive team lead hire in San Francisco or New York City.

"Target led the retail industry by announcing in 2017 that it would raise its starting wage to $15 per hour, hitting the milestone nearly two years ago. The company is now taking its next meaningful step by setting a new starting wage range from $15 to $24. The new approach will apply to hourly team members working in Target stores, supply chain facilities and headquarters locations, positioning Target as a wage leader in every market where it operates. The exact starting wage within the range will depend on the job and the local market, with market-level wages set by the retailer based on industry benchmarking, local wage data and more."

Re: Target 2022
For anyone who wonders why I have such a negative impression toward Target- this is how the Reno Target looks. There is one Target in Reno, this is it (and another in Sparks which is better than this but not by much). Not my video, but this store usually looks similar to this when I go in (maybe this is a bit worse than usual).
Store is always VERY well staffed with multiple packs of 5-8 employees who stand around talking. The only people actually working are a couple cashiers and a handfull of people running around the store pulling pick up orders.

Re: Target 2022
Target has opened a new 33,000 square foot store in New York's Times Square. It has a CVS Pharmacy inside as well.

Target closing Gainsville small format store.

I think these small format stores are going to often times fail. It will be interesting to see what the success rate ends up being.

Re: Target 2022
Target has changed hours again recently. The Orange County, California stores were closing at 9 PM a while ago. Now most are 8 AM to 10 PM and Garden Grove is open until 11 PM.
Two San Francisco Target stores are now open until 8 PM. These are the Geary Boulevard and Stonestown Galleria stores. The 32,000 square foot Target at Stonestown was supposed to expand to 90,000 square feet by taking over some of the former Nordstrom space. The Geary Target used to be a Sears store. It is quite large at 120,000 square feet.
The other Target stores in San Francisco still close at 6 PM including the downtown Metreon location. Downtown San Francisco must be dead at night still.

Re: Target 2022
It's funny how big box retailers in the US are having so much trouble with small format stores. In Europe, it's common for the same retailer to have large, medium and small stores, with a product assortment tailored to each size. For example, Tesco has everything from 100k sq. ft. supercenters down to small convenience stores. I suppose it's early in the game and they are still experimenting, but I would have thought that Walmart and Target would have figured this out by now.storewanderer wrote: ↑April 7th, 2022, 9:37 pm Target closing Gainsville small format store.

Re: Target 2022
They just announced a remodel of their Warren, MI store (lower middle-class store relocated about 13 years ago from an original 1990s store about 1/2 mile away). Going to put in Ulta Beauty, apparently. Really good, immaculately clean store with both Cafe and Starbucks still operating. Troy, MI store (former Greatland) is winding up it's remodel (also putting in Ulta).
