Bed Bath & Beyond CEO Is Out

Post by Alpha8472 »

The CEO that led the retail overhaul of the company has left. He was responsible for decluttering the stores. Inventory was reduced. There were fewer items to choose from. The former CEO said that too many items to choose from would lead to "Purchase Paralysis." So the company got rid of selection and only had a couple of air fryers to choose from.

The shelves were lowered and items were not stacked as high. Aisles were widened so that the store would look more spacious. Walmart tried to do this. They kept the aisles open and clear for a while. However, sales dropped off significantly. Then Walmart added back those huge piles of merchandise in the middle of the aisles. Sales went back up.

The problem with having fewer items to choose from means you are vulnerable to supply chain issues. If those items are out of stock the shelves will be empty. This led to $100 million in lost sales as the top 200 best selling items were out of stock. To this day there are many shelves that are empty at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. It looks terrible and it is causing a loss in sales.

If they had a larger inventory then customers would at least have something on the shelves to choose from.

In the past, the great selection at Bed Bath and Beyond was the draw. You could wander and discover many interesting gadgets like a treasure hunt. Now you have a choice of about 2 for each type of product. You could get the same 2 items at any other store. They used to carry many items that Walmart did not. Now you are stuck with the same few items that Walmart carries. These items are cheaper at Walmart.

I talked to so many people the past couple years who were unhappy with Bed Bath and Beyond. These were people who were ready to drop $200-$300 immediately on some product, which they thought they could get at that store, then they went in and could never find what they needed. Worst, the items in question were not available on the website either so they could not even order it from them (which I don't think they would have even done, given they were already frustrated with the store not having what they wanted). They would then return home, and go place their order on Amazon.

Never did talk to any of the, I guess, college kids or low income individual the new merchandise was geared toward who said they started to shop at Bed Bath and Beyond either. Those customers kept shopping at Target.

As i said before, BBB used to be a fun place to shop and they had merchandise at various price points. Now, it's mostly junk. let's hope the replacement knows how to merchandise.
