Subway Sandwich Vending Machine at UC San Diego

Post by Alpha8472 »

The automated fridge at UC San Diego contains sandwiches stocked daily by a local Subway franchise. The machine can understand spoken English and answer questions. The machine sterilizes itself with UVC light after each purchase.

The fridge machine uses weight sensors to charge your card. It is cashless.

Subway also has a grab and go program with 400 locations at casinos, gas stations, hospitals, and airports. I don't know about buying sandwiches that have been sitting around all day long.

There are subs that can be made in a commissary, shipped a few hours away, and sit in a refrigerated bin but Subway is not one of them.

Those are probably going to be absolutely disgusting.

Apparently some Asian Subway locations have been selling from vending machines for a while now, but vending machines seem to be a lot more prevalent in Asia (especially Japan) than they are in Western countries. Here's a video showing a vending machine in front of a Subway location in Singapore:

This reminds me of the FEBO vending machines in Holland. I wonder why this hasn't caught on in the US. It's a great concept, and would save on labor costs.

There is too much competition in the US for customers to tolerate this type of pre-made product. Customers are used to being able to customize in the US.

It is definitely more efficient and a huge labor savings...

Perhaps they can offer vending machines at the entry level price then charge you more if you want to customize (similar to what Little Caesar's has done with the "hot and ready" pizzas).
