Was in Reno JCP today. Noticed signs posted around the jewelry case. The signs stated "valid Photo ID required to be presented before viewing items in this case." Wow. Have never seen this before. And the young clerk gets to screw around enforcing this policy. This really seems like a terrible policy. They had people's IDs just sitting there behind their counter by the register as they were showing them jewelry. Maybe a better policy would be to position security visible in the jewelry department. Also hard to believe a jewelry thief would bother to hit JCP.
Out in the mall one of the chain jewelry stores, I forget which one, had its sliding gate that opens out into the mall mostly closed and had it so there was just a small opening in the gate to enter the store, basically a space large enough for one person at a time to enter/exit and from a distance the store looked closed. They had signs posted on the closed parts of the gate pointing to the open part of the gate for entrance.

It is due to grab and run thieves. They ask to see items and then grab it and run. They have hit many stores in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hate to say it, but asking for ID might just cut down on this type of theft.
Or they could put in a bullet proof entrance vestibule with 2 locked sets of doors with a metal detector inside. I have seen it at some banks. They call it a mantrap.

There was a high-end independent jewelry store in downtown Royal Oak MI (suburban downtown near Detroit) in an old bank building that had a man-trap. Double entry as described. We got our wedding rings there. They moved to a smaller space across the street(the old bank building was big--they were rattling around).
