It's interesting that Kroger is opening these while the Fred Meyer brand, with the similar format, is stagnant in regard to new locations.
Kroger doesn't seem to want to open new locations along the Pacific Coast. Probably the combination of soda taxes, bag bans, labor laws, etc. make operating along the Pacific Coast more costly than other places.
It's one of the reasons I question why they want to purchase the largest supermarket chain on the West coast to begin with. Do they really want all of those Albertsons, Safeway and Vons stores that face the same pressures in the same markets that they don't want to open new stores in anyways.

They were planning on building a new store in Bend next to a new Costco. They pulled out an now I hear apartments are going on that site. A second Fred Meyer in Bend would have helped them in the market with all that growth going on. It's too bad.

That seems to be the classic story when it comes to new Fred Meyer Stores. They rarely materialize.
At least Fred Meyer has the store in Redmond.
So was Costco going to relocate its current Bend Store and they also pulled out of the relocation?

Fred Meyer should definitely pounce on the site, it wasn't planned that long ago either.
