This does not apply to grocery store delis. However grocery store delis compete directly with fast food to attract employees. So if there are numerous fast food jobs available at $20 per hour, the grocery store deli offering $16 per hour is going to have a tough time getting staffing.babs wrote: ↑October 20th, 2023, 4:08 pmDoes this apply to grocery store delis? Could they be a winner here if they serve sandwiches with a lower labor cost structure?ClownLoach wrote: ↑October 20th, 2023, 4:06 pmThey can serve healthy food but still will be forced into the higher wage program.

It may not matter to younger workers but I'm going to guess the benefits package is much better at a grocery store. And probably somewhat better hours and working conditions.storewanderer wrote: ↑October 22nd, 2023, 12:16 amThis does not apply to grocery store delis. Grocery store deli working conditions are very poor. This is the highest turnover department in many stores. The large chains specifically Safeway and Kroger have very complicated deli programs and the expectations are simply too high. Everyone working in the deli has to perform customer service, perform cleaning, cook fried food, slice lunchmeat, stock displays, dishwashing, and do various other tasks. I think it is the most difficult job in the store. These delis are chronically understaffed. If they were staffed properly with employees assigned to designated tasks it would be more efficient and more pleasant for all involved. It could be a good job, but the chains paying too low in this department combined with understaffing combined with too many expectations ruins it.babs wrote: ↑October 22nd, 2023, 9:00 amIt may not matter to younger workers but I'm going to guess the benefits package is much better at a grocery store. In fast food there are many positions that never have to face a customer. There are many positions that never have to do dishwashing. The only person who remotely has to "stock a shelf" is whoever unloads the truck and at fast food that is a small delivery and once a day at most.
The irony is grocery chains say one of the reasons they can't pay better in deli is due to "price competition from fast food."

Though that is only partially true. After all, I know of no fast-food chain that sells sliced meat and cheese by the pound, and few, if any, that sell things like potato or macaroni salad (coleslaw is a bit more common). Those are the "true" things that a deli was for, they just went beyond and added all the foods that are more of the competition part.storewanderer wrote: ↑October 22nd, 2023, 11:55 am The irony is grocery chains say one of the reasons they can't pay better in deli is due to "price competition from fast food."
