Firecreek Crossing SC in Reno (home of the region's only Sam's Club, Floor & Decor, Natural Grocers, & Scandanavian Designs) is getting a long-awaited hotel/casino, albeit from a different developer than originally anticipated. Part of the renovation includes demolishing a long-vacant Circuit City and Sports Authority, along with currently-operating Applebee's, Starbucks, Toys & More, and Great Clips.
Looks to be an interesting project, and is a boon to the nearby convention center, since it provides 200 more hotel rooms for conventioneers.

Looks like a beautiful "streamline moderne" (the last phase of Art Deco) building.
Really beautiful!

Re: Re-development at Firecreek Crossing SC in Reno
I know Storewanderer and I are probably going to be a bit skeptical, since it has been since the recession of 2008 when plans were announced for this site by Station Casinos. However, the land has the right zoning, two boxes get demolished with a nice facility in their place, and it provides additional rooms for the RSCVA (Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority). So, if it happens, it's a win. This owner also owns a couple of the cardrooms/casinos in California, and seems to do a nice job with those, so I am hopeful this place will be as successful.
Personally, other than At Home wanting to come to the area pre-COVID, I am not sure if any other retailers would want to fill those boxes - they've been vacant for several years. The old Good Guys across the street would be perfect for a company like Micro Center or another smaller retailer (like an ALDI). If I had to guess, Apple American might look at the recently vacated Claim Jumper in the area as a potential relocation for Applebee's.

Re: Re-development at Firecreek Crossing SC in Reno
This site has always made sense for a casino and the prospect of a casino on this site has been floated for many years. Existing casino operators in Reno have been very good at keeping competition out. We will see if this ever opens.
I'd rather see a casino on this site than more apartments.
The empty Gart/Sports Authority and empty Circuit City boxes have been curious dead space for many years. The fact that this casino operator went ahead and wants to add those spaces to their project is, in my opinion, great.
It is a big leap to go from operating card rooms to a full casino though.

And this project is dead for the time being, probably no surprise to @storewanderer and I. The vacant Circuit City and Gart boxes back up on LoopNetstorewanderer wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2022, 10:59 pm This site has always made sense for a casino and the prospect of a casino on this site has been floated for many years. Something else of note is that Natural Grocers is relocating from their space next to Floor and Decor to part of the vacant Bed Bath & Beyond location across the street:

Re: Re-development at Firecreek Crossing SC in Reno
And what a difference a year makes- I see no chance of apartments on this site now given what has happened to apartment development in Reno. Existing projects at a snail's pace or stalled out, new complexes opening with painfully low occupancy rates...
I also suspect this casino's funding sources may have gotten spooked by how the Legends Casino is doing in Sparks.
Plus business at the convention center in Reno is so slow they are hosting Trump next week. Previously he got hosted out on the dirt/runway? at the Minden airport.

Re: Re-development at Firecreek Crossing SC in Reno
I have seen many stores in the San Francisco Bay Area close due to plans for condos, and then years later the buildings sit empty. The Nob Hill Foods in San Ramon, closed years ago and still sits empty. Those luxury townhouses were never built. In fact, a new Sports Clips opened up in the abandoned shopping center. The Starbucks is still there in the parking lot. It has not been closed.
I see many new luxury condos sitting empty in my city. Who would want to pay high prices for these tiny condos with no yard? The many office buildings next door are all empty. Everyone is working from home. What might have been a short commute is no longer a draw. There is no need to leave home now.
What I have noticed is restaurants and stores getting closed down for car dealerships. Car dealerships seem to be doing ok.

What is happening in some cases with car dealerships is they are moving to smaller and/or more efficient (such as multi level garage set up) sites. The old sprawling single level car lot isn't very efficient use of land.

I have seen car dealerships in my city storing cars in parking garages. They rent parking garages instead of having a huge surface lot.
