Safeway licensing banner in China
Yet another reason Kroger should divest the rights to this banner to C&S.
Even the current management is willing to turn this banner into a model with different ownership.

This group in China may not want to get too tangled up in the Signature brands. If the merger happens goodbye to those.
Kroger already did private labels in China years ago. But never let someone use any of its banners there.

Does Albertsons still have agreements for Sobeys to use the Safeway name in Canada?storewanderer wrote: ↑July 9th, 2024, 8:48 am Yet another reason Kroger should divest the rights to this banner to C&S.

Then there is Morrisons with their use of the Safeway name in the UK…

But can you imagine the prices if they stuck to Safeway pricing strategy?

I do not like American companies operating in countries like China. Turns my stomach.storewanderer wrote: ↑July 9th, 2024, 2:36 pmIf I were shopping in China it would be a welcome sight.veteran+ wrote: ↑July 9th, 2024, 12:25 pmMakes me sick!storewanderer wrote: ↑July 9th, 2024, 8:48 am Yet another reason Kroger should divest the rights to this banner to C&S.

Re: Safeway licensing banner in China
It will be through a licensee from what I can tell, expanding a current agreement where this licensee gets Signature brands.veteran+ wrote: ↑July 10th, 2024, 8:51 amI do not like American companies operating in countries like China. I don't think Safeway will actually "own" any part of the business in China. But they'll certainly profit from it...
I think Costco and Wal Mart operations in China are at least partially owned directly?

It's really unclear what's being licensed or whatever in the article.storewanderer wrote: ↑July 10th, 2024, 7:00 pmIt will be through a licensee from what I can tell, expanding a current agreement where this licensee gets Signature brands.veteran+ wrote: ↑July 10th, 2024, 8:51 amI do not like American companies operating in countries like China. Walmart owns their operation in China. Unlike other foreign retailers who went into the market in the 90s, they never did a joint venture. Costco also seems to own their China operation.

Re: Safeway licensing banner in China
All of the old Safeway operations aren't controlled by Albertsons anymore, partially on the way international trademarks working differently (Woolworth is the same way). Safeway's operations in UK and Australia became totally independent operations after Safeway Stores sold them to local operators.

Re: Safeway licensing banner in China
Safeway was at one time a truly international chain, with stores in the US, Canada (all the way to Ontario), Australia, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and other places. I still hear Australians casually refer to Woolworth as "Safeway". The brand equity is stronger than many of us realize. Western brands do very well in China with the growing middle class, and people there will pay more to shop at an "American" store, even if it's in name only.

We know the licensee is already selling "Signature" brand products in whatever their existing stores are.HCal wrote: ↑August 12th, 2024, 1:37 am Safeway was at one time a truly international chain, with stores in the US, Canada (all the way to Ontario), Australia, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and other places. I expect it will be as similar to a US Safeway as a China Sam's Club or Costco is to a US version... they are very different, but also very similar at the same time. Different from the usual chain stores there.
The China version of Wal Mart is quite radically different from the US version.
