Re: Quik Trip Book
I read it about ten years ago. They used to sell it in the store, usually on display by the checkout. I found it pretty interesting, but I had a coworker who borrowed it and felt it was pretty poorly written. It's written as a first-hand account of how the business grew. I think my coworker thought it was going to be like a motivational-type business book. I enjoyed reading about why they do things the way they do and how they're set up. It explained why they chose the markets they're in, how they compensate and reward their store managers, etc.
I would really like an update to it, because they have been expanding travel locations across the country and that doesn't fit their former business model of setting up hubs around major cities.
Unfortunately, I think I let someone borrow my copy and I no longer have it.

Many local libraries still participate in Inter-library loan. Talk with your reference desk, they likely can request a copy for you.storewanderer wrote: ↑October 13th, 2024, 1:05 am Anyone read this? How is it?

Re: Quik Trip Book
I asked about this and they seemed to discourage me (I didn't even tell them the title) and said there would be a charge and it would take weeks to arrive. I asked about the charge - what was the charge for/based on? Weeks to arrive? Sounds like USPS Media Mail... that is really cheap shipping... They said they would only know the fee after securing the copy but I had to pay the fee whatever it was... and I'd only have the book for 2 weeks and it could not be renewed. They encouraged me to try a used book store instead. Again I hadn't even told them the title. I got the feeling they didn't want to even try.SamSpade wrote: ↑October 15th, 2024, 9:45 amMany local libraries still participate in Inter-library loan. There is a ballot question to keep allocating these libraries 2% of the county budget... (if this question fails that 2% will just go back to the county "general fund"- won't result in a tax cut). I am still going to vote to allocate that budget to them but this experience made me somewhat reconsider my position on that.

With ILL, at least at my library, you can set a maximum you're willing to pay. If the lending library charges less than that, they will order it. If not, they won't.

Re: Quik Trip Book
It's normal for ILL to be time limited without renewal. As a rule they want to keep books available in circulation, regardless of the title and they don't want to make the effort to make sure they get it back after multiple renewals. You're lucky that this kind of book (basically a vanity item) is in a library. Most likely it was a donation that some librarian decided to keep rather than put in the "friends of the library" sale bin.HCal wrote: ↑October 16th, 2024, 1:17 amSounds like you got a lazy employee, maybe try a different branch.storewanderer wrote: ↑October 15th, 2024, 10:55 pm

There are many books written by many successful individuals about "what they did" and "how they did it." Successful doctors, educators, businesspeople, athletes. Are those all vanity items? Seems like you'd really gut out a lot of library variety by not having "vanity items" in there..

Re: Quik Trip Book
I looked up the publisher of this book. It's some company that no one has heard of, and which says on their website that they specialize in publishing people's family and business histories.storewanderer wrote: ↑October 16th, 2024, 5:40 pm Why are we lucky this kind of item is in a library?

Libraries usually don't like such things. They want nonfiction from publishers that have a peer review process, and fiction that has been critically acclaimed by reputable sources. There's just too much junk out there that is self-published or published by some no-name publisher who will print anything they are paid to print.
Perhaps a library in the local area would be interested in such an item, but I can't imagine it having any sort of wide appeal.
With that said, I'd encourage you to try and ILL it. My local public library does a good job with these requests. If you know any college students/staff you can ask them as well, since college libraries often provide ILL for free.

I think the county card I have here still works at the libraries in the University System in Nevada... I'll have to look into that.HCal wrote: ↑October 16th, 2024, 10:59 pmI looked up the publisher of this book.
