I am thinking folks who are die hard at ice skating and have to park in the garage to get there etc. hauling heavy ice skates in and out of the mall don't want to stop and shop when they go to ice skate.

Also not sure if maybe there are other indoor ice skating facilities in PDX metro that are more convenient and have easier access.

The ice rink is a draw and does bring people into the mall but it's just not enough. They also downsized the rink in the last remodel taking it from a rectangle hockey rink to a giant oval that can no longer accommodate hockey. Portland does have a lack of rinks. And the ones they have tend to struggle. I think without an NHL team, the allure of hockey just isn't there. And ice skating alone isn't enough to sustain rinks.

Portland does have the Winterhawks hockey team, so there is some interest. But they did remove the rink from Clackamas Town Center during a major remodel years ago. There was also an indoor ice rink in Vancouver for a while. The building is still there but I don't think it is an ice rink any more.

The ice rink in Vancouver is now a church. The Sherwood ice rink had to be financially saved by the Portland Winterhawks. This jr hockey league team just doesn't draw that well and is not enough to stimulate interest. Seattle also didn't have much interest in hockey until the Kraken arrived.

Previous ownership decided they wanted to remake the ice rink over protest of professional (and training) skaters to an oval shape instead of the already tight (from what I understood) standard curved rectangle shape. Once that was done, many of the young skating families moved to Sherwood or the "Winterhawks Ice Arena" in Beaverton, Ore.

The pricing is approximately the same as other indoor rinks in this region, at around $20 for an open session and $5 for ice skate rental if you don't own them. I don't know how many parents want to pay this for a few hours of mediocre ice skating. It is also quite a bit less expensive to roller skate at Oaks Park (I'm not sure of other roller rinks here) for $13 including skates (given, at much reduced availability vs. the ice rink).

The snow is back too. (my spouse and I were there Saturday when it was falling on a public skate session)

The land owners have shown publicly limited plans of what they wish to do with the current mall and surrounding parking structures property. So far there is still progress according to news reports on a concert venue, but it will require demolishing the current former Nordstrom anchor. The rest of the property is supposed to become a mixture of "reopened neighborhood streets" and other amenities. They recently were passed over by the city government to become the home of a new earthquake-safe civic performances hall.

Yes, Clackamas Town Center remodeled out its rink in 2007 (!) and the place has been less interesting ever since. :)

I did visit the Joe Brown's Carmel Corn and Barnes & Noble stores on Sunday. It was fine. I actually felt safer than in the past, as the mall was not particularly busy and well cleaned inside.

Posted hours through the holiday season remain 11 am to 7 pm Mo-Sa, 11 am to 6 pm Sun. The Halsey St. garage is very easy to park, walk in and out of the center for most of the still operating merchants. There was some new visible graffiti in the stairwell that ties the levels together. There was a new sign for the pickleball courts directing customers to use a particular garage entrance. I would assume they encourage rooftop parking as the facility is on the upper level.

I personally would probably avoid the structures off NE Multnomah St. at this point.

Staffing at the B&N seems stable and there was no longer a private security guard at the entrance and the store looks pretty good despite the challenge of nearby Powell's.

ROSS really wanted to sign off from the mall, they removed all their signs from the exterior and blacked over their name on the one panel in the interior where it was a non-traditional fixture.

Marshall's still remains on the building on the corner (LOL) but the old Sears building is now seeing some plywood on the exterior and some graffiti.
