Former Super Fresh Closed in 2007 reopens as a Pathmark

Post by maynesg »

A six year old Super Fresh on route 896 in Glasgow Delaware has reopened as a Pathmark this past week. What is interesting about this is that Pathmark has a unit two miles north of thisstore on 896 in Newark, and a colonial Super fresh, three miles north on the same road also in newark. Whe the store closed it was originaly announced that A&P was to reopen this unit as a Pathmark Fresh. This did not happen because A&P refused to rehire allof the grocery union help from local 27 some of which had over twenty years service and had transfered from other area Super Fresh Units in the Area that had closed. The local 56 meat union help were allowed to transfer to a store in Kennet Square P.A.
Over the past year first Redners then Shop Rite had seriously looked to purchase this lease. A& P opened this store as a Pathmark Value center to avoid rehiring their former employees back at their old rate of pay.

Is Pathmark a lower priced warehouse type of store?

Did they remodel the store when it became a Pathmark?

Hi , to answer your question about Pathmark a little history has to be visited.
Pathmark backin the 1960!s were the corporate owned stores of Wakefirm(shop Rite). Shop Rite owners allowed themembers of Pathmark to buy them out. Pathmark in the 70!s and 80!s were the price leaders in North jersey with the highest volumechainstores in the market. A series of corporate buy outs left the company starved for cash, the stores got dirty and did not get renovated . They did strange things like going prepack on meat this cost them share and today they are just another player. A&P purchased them and put the saws bac kin the meat rooms.
In Philadelphia and Delaware , A&P has stated to replace most of their Super Fresh Stores with Pathmark Fresh. These stores have the same perisables as Super Fresh with some what better prices. The Pathmark value stortes are simply regular Pathmarks with a a better price point.
As to the renovations, they consist of a cheap paint job and the same fixtures that were in the Super Fresh Stores.
It the same thingthat A&P did when they converted their stores to Super Fresh cheap Green paint over A&P Red, now its cheap blue paint over cheap green. This dosen!t work they migth want to call them R.I.P. Markets, for
Rest In Peace.Idon!t think they can compete with Acme,ShopRite, Giant,or Walmart in this market

Well, not all Super Fresh locations were replaced by Pathmark, since that store is having problems.

A few Philly and DE locations were converted, but that has slowed considerably. Now the emphasis in on conversions of former A&P locations to Food Basics.

Food Basics is positioned to compete with PRice-rite and Save-a-lot. So far there are 12 Food Basics with at least doubled locations planned into 2010.
