7and i appoints new CEO, plans spin off North American 7-Eleven to avert Couche-Tard takeover

In an effort to fight off a hostile takeover bid by Couche-Tard, 7-Eleven's North American operations will be spun off into a separate company. As part of this, Stephen Dacus (a former Walmart executive) will be the new CEO.

The spin off of North America 7-Eleven appears to bring a merger with Couche Tard closer to reality. Way too much divest issues in the US and Canada for that merger. But if it is spun off, they just need to divest their "investment in 7-Eleven North America."Brian Lutz wrote: ↑March 6th, 2025, 11:59 am https://www.cstoredive.com/news/7-eleve ... es/741535/

The Japanese government has a great dislike of gaijin (outsiders) buying Japanese companies.

7-Eleven US is supposedly such a great, strong, profitable business. I can't wait to see the financial statements.

Spinning off 7-Eleven US is a way for them to raise money to fend off Alimentation Couche-Tard, not hastening it.storewanderer wrote: ↑March 6th, 2025, 6:01 pmThe spin off of North America 7-Eleven appears to bring a merger with Couche Tard closer to reality. That usually does not work. They may be trying to fight, but we will see what actually happens. I expect a deal to occur. Once Couche Tard wants a deal, a deal typically happens.pseudo3d wrote: ↑March 7th, 2025, 6:10 pmSpinning off 7-Eleven US is a way for them to raise money to fend off Alimentation Couche-Tard, not hastening it.storewanderer wrote: ↑March 6th, 2025, 6:01 pmThe spin off of North America 7-Eleven appears to bring a merger with Couche Tard closer to reality. Dumping US/Canada/Mexico 7-Eleven will make a Couche Tard transaction much easier. Couche Tard must know how terrible the US 7-Eleven is so they are willing to let it be spun off vs. try to keep it and divest US Circle K off. Can't speak for Mexico. Canada 7-Eleven is pretty awful, but not as awful as the US 7-Eleven.

Circle K didn’t do very well in Japan when they entered there in the 80s-through a partnership with a Japanese retailer. Yet it is a place where Lawson and Mister Donut still thrive…long after their US creators have disappeared.

Lawson is not the best example. They licensed the name, but the stores carried a more narrow range of merchandise than the US stores, which sold Consolidated Foods' grocery lines and alcohol. The current Lawson operation sells instant noodles and and snacks and is closer to the old US model.
