The egg producers claim that there is still a shortage and they are keeping the prices high.

The customers are buying eggs like crazy at outrageous prices and are hoarding them. The egg companies see this as an opportunity to make a huge profit. Manufacturer a "shortage" and drive up the demand. Customers buy at any price and the companies reap the rewards.

The Berkeley Bowl supermarket has its own chicken flock and none of them have caught bird flu. The supermarket has a huge supply of eggs and sells them for a much lower price.

People should just buy from neighbors with chickens.

NorCal Safeway 10.99 dozen Lucerne Large Eggs. 15.99 18ct of same. Unreal.

They're selling these same eggs at 5.59 in Reno. Must be losing a ton on eggs here coming out of NorCal with a greater than $9 per dozen cost out of the California suppliers. Another reason to get these stores in Reno out of NorCal Division and into Intermountain.

Continued stable product in both Hawaii (typical high Hawaii prices, but numerous source options) and Oregon:
In Oregon, seeing abundant Wilcox eggs in a variety of types (organic, "Oregon raised," pasture, etc) for about $1 more than conventional Lucerne large egg dozens/18 packs.
$6.99/$10.49
Probably time to update this image as well. . .

They are playing games with the pricing on these cage free eggs in certain states. They price them higher in states that have cage free laws, than they price them in states surrounding that do not have the cage free laws.

The pricing for eggs at my Safeway in DC is odd.

My store was selling all store-brand eggs (with the exception of the Open Nature "Heirloom" Eggs and the Lucerne Jumbo size) for 6.49 a dozen - O Organics Regular Cage Free, O Organics Pasture Raised, Open Nature Cage Free, and regular Lucerne were all being sold at the same price.

Probably since where the laws don't exist, there are other options that will be cheaper, so if they didn't price them lower they would have trouble selling them.

When everyone has to be the same, the prices can be as well (and often higher, particularly in some areas where supply is more limited and not easily added to).
