Cheyenne SWY: Pioneer Ave
I understand SWY has been trying to relocate this store for the past five years and has bought houses on a surrounding block. The houses have been boarded up for a while and no relocation has happened.

Re: Cheyenne SWY: Pioneer Ave
Safeway might be holding off on building a new store. A new store would cost a lot of money and the new store might not bring in enough profit to justify the cost of a completely new store. The current store probably makes a decent profit right now.

Here's a lovely article...
http://www.wyomingnews.com/articles/200 ... -03-09.txt
Neighbors: "More Safeway! Less ugly houses!"
Safeway: "The economic recession is hard!"
DEQ: "Say, we should do something about them chemicals."
Development Director: "Whats the fuss? They got two years."
The reader's comments are awesome.
I don't know...Some of us think that old store is pretty darn cool.
Safeway also has plans to replace the Cole Shopping Center store with a new building at that site.

Re: Cheyenne SWY: Pioneer Ave
I say less replacing stores and more decreasing prices.
Maybe they think they can chase Albertsons (SVU) out of town.

Re: Cheyenne SWY: Pioneer Ave
I was in all three Cheyenne Safeways in July 2008. It's an interesting group of stores.
The downtown store is a blast from the past, with the old circle S on the outside. I attached a few pictures below. I managed to snap them with a cameraphone without getting thrown into Safeway jail.
The Cole Shopping Center store was also a blast from the past. It had the wooden trim behind the sign on the front of the store, a sorta-kinda-hidden arch, and one of those old Safeway Parking buggy signs. The interior was the same scheme as the Pioneer Ave. store.
And the third store was modern, with the late 1990s/early 2000s pre-Lifestyle interior; my guess was that it was built with that interior, but I couldn't say for sure.
It was interesting to see that none of the three had the Lifestyle renovation.
And it's interesting to note that, of the dozen or so Safeways in Wyoming, two (Pionner Cheyenne and Lander) still have the circle S logo, or at least did in July 2008.

Yes it was. And it has since been remodeled into a Lifestyle store.
Re: Cheyenne SWY: Pioneer Ave
I did a quick Cheyenne tour on my way home yesterday.
Pioneer Ave Safeway is still operating, and the homes on the block immediately behind it are all standing and mostly boarded up (there's a couple that still appear to be occupied).
Nothing about the homes looks really bad...they even painted the boards on most of them.
Cole Shopping Center still stands as always and the old Marina Safeway continues on as normal with the 90's interior its had for the past decade or more.
Safeway on S Greeley Hwy, a new build within the past five years (replacing an old and very small Safeway just to the north), recently received the new logo and paint on the exterior. This is the only Safeway in town with a gas station, and it's a mess. They need to expand it.
Albertson's LLC still operates their two stores (both old Buttreys). The east side former Albertson's that became econo foods is now apparently a Big Lots. I didn't get over to the other one.

Re: Cheyenne SWY: Pioneer Ave
Albertsons LLC sold the Wyoming Albertsons stores to SuperValu. That didn't include the Rock Springs and Jackson Albertsons stores, which were already owned by SuperValu.

Re: Cheyenne SWY: Pioneer Ave
This store is closing at the end of the month and will turn into "office space for the state."
So much for building a new store.

Safeway sure is closing a lot of stores lately.

Sad. It was a very unique store.
