Other NorCal Safeways with the same layout this store had include Crescent City and Fortuna. Also, Williams Highway in Grants Pass, OR.

omnisuperstore wrote: November 11th, 2018, 6:39 pm Safeway sure has had some bad luck with fires lately. First the store in Phoenix in July, now this one in Paradise. Was this in the NorCal division? I saw on google that it had a very old decor.

Construction wise, I am guessing these grocery buildings in Paradise were not built like our grocery stores in the Midwest. It appears the roof trusses were engineered wood, which could be especially prone to collapse in even a weak fire, compared to the steel structure stores we build here in the Midwest. It’s very unusual for a fully sprinkled steel or concrete constructed retail store to burn to the ground here.

Thoughts?
Wood is still used in some new construction and remodels. It varies by region. It also varies by building codes and how much a store wants to spend on new construction/remodels.

But I think the devastation in California is an extreme circumstance which may have only been prevented if buildings had exterior roof sprinkler systems which would turn on way before fires hit an area. Such a system may not be practical or feasible on a larger building like a Kmart, Walmart, etc. And it could strain a water supply in a disaster.

There is a SaveMart on the same street in Paradise. Was that store destroyed or damaged also?

According to the first post, it was destroyed along with the Kmart in the same plaza...
lake52 wrote: November 8th, 2018, 8:56 pm According to Facebook the SaveMart, Safeway, Kmart, and Holiday Market in town have all been destroyed.
UPDATE:

The store's Facebook page notes the store is in fact still standing, just closed until it's safe:

Save Mart and Kmart are in the same shopping center (along with a huge closed Rite Aid that relocated down the road).

So I wonder if the Kmart is also repairable? If they can get repairs made before the company goes...

I would not expect Kmart to reopen. They did not rebuild in Santa Rosa, although there was already a dispute brewing between Kmart and the owner of the building there going back a few years. The building itself may be repairable, but its days as a Kmart may be over.

The owners of Grocery Outlet are issuing their employees final paychecks and generally taking care of their staff.

It's a reminder of how sometimes you miss "mom and pop" operations. The nearby stores have stepped up to fund relief efforts and provide support for the store owners and staff, it seems based on social media.

G.O. was unfortunately located next door to Safeway so it is also gone.
