Noticed tonight in a NorCal Safeway they made some changes to the drug department. Gone are the four feet high shelves in half of drug and a center aisle splitting those from some taller aisles that had baby and shampoo.
Now the center aisle is eliminated and all 3 of the drug aisles are full height running front to back. They probably doubled the number of SKUs. This is the good part. Private label items seem to be few and far between outside OTC drug. Pricing is still terrible and there is very little promotion but I did notice a few "10 for $10" items like some Signature Peroxide (regular price 3.49????), some liquid soap, and a few other things.
Probably decided to internally go forward with something that was planned as a "synergy" of the failed Rite Aid merger.

Re: Safeway expansion of drug department
Albertsons used to have a good variety of drugstore products when they had Equaline. The store brand was of a good quality. If only Albertsons could bring that back or find another store brand to use. People who buy drug items from supermarkets usually do so out of convenience or as a last resort if a real drugstore is not nearby. People can tolerate a slightly higher price, but not unreasonably high prices.
