Albertsons buys former Shopko Hometown in Powell, Wyoming

Post by retailfanmitchell019 »

This town of 6,300 already has 2 grocery stores, an AFS supplied independent and an AWG supplied independent.
The nearest Albertsons is a half hour away in the larger town of Cody.

This might seem like an absurd concept, but...what if Albertsons wanted to try something completely different by assembling a line of general merchandise to test out near their main division?

At 28,500 square feet, this is not a huge building. I would guess that it will more likely become a regular Albertsons.

Probably, but it just seems odd to build a third grocery store in a market that's arguably maxed out. It's also a bit strange to go building in rural markets like that, nearly all the new-builds (as opposed to acquisitions) under Albertsons in the last five years or so have all been in established urban markets.

Just because the local guys claim it's maxed out doesn't mean that the giant goliath that is Albertsons can't come in and pull all their business. It's a win-win for Albertsons, and a scary time for the two independents.

It's a pretty solid strategy. There are many rural towns in which Albertsons could offer a better selection of products at a lower price point that of the independent guys; there's definitely a market that prefers an alternative option beyond Walmart, including many Southeastern markets it once monopolized. With such a small footprint, the store is a low risk to Albertsons.

I wonder if part of what they were going after was the pharmacy.

It could be part of the entire equation but I don't think a store pharmacy itself would entice an acquisition.

Albertsons has started work on the new store in Powell.

Allegedly, this store will be branded as a Safeway, even though Albertsons outnumbers Safeway in Wyoming. Albertsons with 9, Safeway with 5.
This store would be in the Safeway-dominated Denver division, and will open later this year.

That would be interesting, but they would need to do it in a large number of stores in order to have enough buying power to be viable. Even Kroger seems to be struggling with the Marketplace and Fred Meyer stores.

Alternatively, they could rent out some space to an outside operator for general merchandise, and have some sort of store-within-a-store.
