Possible DC Area Safeway Strike

Post by mjhale »

Looks like Safeway employees in the DC area are heading towards a possible strike. The union and Albertsons say they have made progress over a number of issues but the main sticking point is the pension.

The union is claiming that Albertsons does not want to fully fund the pension fund as they are supposed to do under the current contract and the pension fund itself. The union wants Albertsons to fully fund obligations if the pension fund should become insolvent while Albertsons says that the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) would be the one who would fund those obligations.

The UFCW has posted on their web site that no agreement has been made with Albertsons and a strike vote will occur on March 5th.

UFCW Local 400 already has a deal with Giant. Over the past 20 years there has been a lot of new grocery competition in most of the DC area. With the major decline of Shoppers Giant and Safeway remain the only major union grocers in the DC area.
