The current wildfires in the Pacific Northwest do make a case for the existence of indoor malls. The amount of smoke present outside right now is unprecedented in this area.

In California, indoor malls have black soot stains coming out of their ancient vents. The air conditioning systems are blowing out barely filtered air. Sunvalley Mall was uncomfortably hot and stuffy inside. The air was smokey. Malls seriously need to upgrade to MERV 13 air filters to filter out smoke and coronavirus, but most mall owners would never shell out that much money.

Customers are not confident about indoor malls. If mall owners were to advertise new air filters, they might bring back some more customers.

AMC theatres and Showcase Cinemas are the only major chains that have installed MERV 13 air filters in all of their theaters. Some chains are installing bipolar ionization to kill germs.

The state of California didn't require that of mall operators as part of reopening?!? WOW! I thought that was pretty much standard practice.

One of those things that depends on who is running the state.
