To add to the market sub segmentation theme…

They’re still expanding the gourmet Andronicos name in Norcal - this one opened in Sea Cliff SF earlier this year with yet another project from the College of Western Idaho design students who did the Pavilions package

Wonder if they think the Andronico's name could grow? That store is using Pavilions fixtures.

Some of those aisles look quite narrow and not to nitpick too much but why didn't somebody think to put a fresh coat of red paint on the curbing at the entrance? Not a huge issue but when you're trying to project an image every small detail plays a part.

Andronico's is a tarnished name in Alamo and San Ramon, California. The Andronico's in nearby Walnut Creek had high prices, far away garage only parking, and a terrible location. The Albertsons in Walnut Creek did more business than Andronico's. Andronico's closed down due to poor sales. Albertsons was cheap compared to Andronico's.

Albertsons is weary of getting rid of the Safeway name. When Albertsons got rid of the Lucky name, customers rebelled. The Albertsons stores in Northern California lost so many sales because people despised the Albertsons name. Getting rid of the trusted Safeway name in favor of an unknown chain called Pavilions would cause backlash.

Albertsons just gave its Murrieta store at 215/Scott a Colorful Lifestyle remodel. This one was remodeled out of the mid-2000's Jewel interior (which dates back to the store's opening in 2005).

The Crow Canyon Safeway in San Ramon, California is nearing the completion of its new remodel. The store looks like a Pavilions in everything but name. The original Safeway never attempted to open up a Pavilions in Northern California. Pavilions was once a well known high end supermarket in Southern California. However, after Safeway bought the chain, the chain lost its higher end feel.

Large areas of new faux wood floors and higher quality white tiles really make the store look very nice. I prefer this decor over the Florida decor. I noticed a new glass wine room with an automated sliding glass door. There is a wine steward's counter. It looks like they will be doing wine tasting at this store.

Safeway is supposed to be building a new store in Mountain House (unincorporated community on the far west side of Tracy). Haven't been out there since before covid, so I don't know what progress has been made. Supposedly it will be open this summer.

That store is supposed to open sometime around Easter.

That was an old site in the pipeline from Safeway for 10+ years. It is funny how much of the new development in NorCal are old sites like that. I guess in a market where you're the only conventional building you can sit on sites for a long, long time.

It's good to see that they've come to their senses on the polished concrete and gone back to regular flooring. They were using the worst vendors on the planet for the PC work and not doing any type of remediation work to stain to a uniform color and/or recoat to hide old trenches. They basically just did a quickie two night diamond polish and hung up the new decor and sign on a few stores that got this same remodel in SoCal. Some of the Target stores that converted to PC are decades old, but because they used the best vendors they were able to get a uniform color and do stencilwork to mask the worst areas.
