Vancouver Mall to remodel

Post by Super S »

Vancouver Mall, in Vancouver, WA, is planning a remodel:

https://www.columbian.com/news/2020/oct ... s-to-open/

It looks to be a minor remodel to update flooring and seating throughout the mall, but it's worth noting due to all of the struggles many malls are seeing right now. For what it's worth, they seem to do a good job here of getting empty anchor spaces filled fairly quickly. This mall has seen its share of closures, including Mervyn's, Nordstrom, and Sears. The mall's JCPenney appears safe for now as they are closing the freestanding location in East Vancouver.

I do kinda hope that they move escalators back to their original locations though. Under Westfield ownership, during the last remodel, they were moved to the ends of the mall adjacent to Macy's and JCPenney. The center mall anchor spaces which had escalators have all since closed and have been split up into separate spaces. There is a long walk between escalators.

This mall seems to do well especially when you consider the sales tax factor and how close the mall is to Oregon.

Carpeting and rugs will trap dirt and germs. I remember when many malls got rid of their decades old carpet for tile or wood flooring. Even faux wood flooring would be better than rugs and carpet. A new Round1 might not attract many customers at this time.

Round1 is not doing well at all. They had to close most of their mall locations in California months ago. They are probably nearing bankruptcy. The one at Sunvalley Mall used to be open until 2 AM. Round1 really brought in a tremendous amount of traffic to this mall. It was the main attraction as the Sears, JCPenney, and Macy's have been struggling for years.

Once Round1 and 24 Hour Fitness closed due to COVID-19, the mall has been a ghost town. The mall did reopen about half of the stores, but business is terrible. They also had to close down most of the parking garages since people were getting robbed so much.

You were lucky to find your car's windows intact if you parked in any of their garages.

The remodeling probaby will not bring that many customers back. People are not interested in new carpeting at a mall.

Vancouver Mall has carpeting on the upper level only and they seem to maintain it well....it looked good when I was last in the mall a couple months ago. The lower level has tile. I would guess what is there now is maybe 10-12 years old but it was part of the last remodel so is not terribly dated looking.

People will eventually return to these places, the mall also has an AMC theater in the old Mervyn's space which has been closed since the pandemic started. The mall is on reduced hours now but these changes (Hobby Lobby, Chick-Fil-A, Round 1) were already in the works before the pandemic.

Round 1 is owned by a China-based group and seems to have taken over many Sears. They took over part of the former Reno Sears. Their remodel to the inside of the Sears was extensive but they did little to the outside. It was nice in there when it opened but now it stinks (literally). Their game costs are very high (higher than casino arcades) and their ticket costs for prizes are also high (higher than casino arcades). It seems to still draw pretty good crowds and since the mall reopened that is one of the few things that has much of any foot traffic.

I'm presuming you mean Japan, not China?

I had read newspaper articles labeling them as China-owned. I see they are Japan owned. Given that they offer Chinese Karaoke (but no other Asian Karaoke) was also interesting.

Regardless of who owns them, I was impressed with their build out but after a few short months was not at all impressed with their maintenance and upkeep.

Also I am not sure how it is compliant for them to even be open in some places during COVID. In NV you cannot open an arcade and a bar in the same facility, you can only have one venue or the other open but not both. Slot machines and bar at same facility are okay though, but not arcade games (??).
