Centers/malls opening prior to the 2008 recession?

Post by cjd »

Are there any centers or malls that opened in your area just prior to or during the late 2000s/early 2010s recession?

In my area the Shoppes at Shelby fit this definition. Opened 2007 (I believe about August/Sept 2007 although was definitely up and running by December 07) with some tenants coming in 2008. Originally anchored by Bed Bath and Beyond, Ross, Michael's Arts and Crafts, Dress Barn, Marshalls, Gold's Gym, Books a Million, Petco and Circuit City.

Circuit City was the first casualty as that chain bankrupted. Spirit Halloween stores opened seasonally in the space, until about two years ago when Ashely Furniture moved in as a permanent tenant.

Dress Barn closed a couple of years ago with Ulta Beauty taking over the space (as well as another smaller adjacent space which had never been occupied by any tenant).

Last year Gold's Gym closed and in October of this year Books a Million closed, leaving the center with two large vacancies. Seeing how Bed Bath and Beyond is doing, could they be next? All of the other original tenants have remained.

OTOH, Bath and Body Works recently relocated from the mall to the center in a small space which originally contained a small Asian dollar store, which had closed early on and was vacant since the late 2000s. A Great Clips also opened in a smaller parcel in 2019, replacing a Fletcher Organ Center. A Nail Salon and Sally Beauty Supply fill the other small spaces.

An outparcel building also built in 2007 contains a Starbucks, Mattress Firm and Panera Bread. Olive Garden opened in another corner in 2008 and most recently in 2017, Taco Bell opened a store, replacing an older 80s or 90s location, which became a Sonic.
