This is an unusual move. Perhaps the Nordstrom Rack was taking too many sales away from the full priced Nordstrom in San Francisco. Why pay full price when you can get it cheaper at Nordstrom Rack?

This probably means that sales at the full priced Nordstrom in the city are not doing so well.

If I had to make an educated guess, the theft rate is probably astronomical and they're closing the lower performing stores first.

I wouldn't think much into it. It reminds me of the Old Navy Stores closing in San Francisco.

They are keeping the downtown Nordstrom Rack open near the full size Nordstrom Store. This Nordstrom Rack closing was in the SoMa district.

Agree. The store opened in 2001, so its lease is probably up. While the immediate area has a plethora of power-center stores like Bed Bath and Beyond and Ross, there's also a Room and Board nearby. My guess is the landlord thinks they can get a more upscale big box or a few smaller boxes in the space.
