The only local store that that I view as 'at risk' as the Orangevale store(8861 Greenback)which was among roughly 30 PayLess Drug locations that Longs Drugs acquired from Rite Aid.Judging from Yelp photos(haven't been to that store due to lack of reliable fixed transit service in that area),it only got a soft remodel where the interior graphics and aisle markers were updated, but the sales floor remains carpet-free.It also appears that the aisles are double wide in some areas. For the most part many local CVS-era new builds have been either relocations of Longs legacy locations(east Fair Oaks which previously was in Birdcage,Campus Commons,El Dorado Hills,Florin West)or to fill coverage holes that either existed in the Longs era(Marconi West as well as a couple South Sac locations including one opposite a Long Drugs location that closed in the early 2000's)or are in fast growing areas(Fiddyment in west Roseville,Bradshaw/Gerber on the Vineyard/Elk Grove border,Capital Village in south Rancho Cordova).
For your life,Thrifty and Payless have got it.

Longs Drugs had 2 stores practically across the street from each other in downtown San Leandro, California. One was across the street from Safeway at a busy corner and the other was next to Safeway. It was overkill. CVS ran both stores for years until CVS built new smaller store with a drive thru a few blocks away. The tiny CVS next to Safeway still is open. I would suspect that the older one will close soon. If that happens, a dollar store or another pharmacy may take over. I have seen some abandoned Walgreens convert to Dollar Tree.

Speaking of Dollar Tree snapping up failed Walgreens locations, that's exactly what happened to a location at 5020 Madison near American River College(opened as Walgreens in the early to mid 2000's and lasted through November 2019).Even before that,Dollar Tree has also been known to have snapped up a number of former Thrifty Drug locations(especially locations that closed in the years preceding the merger with PayLess).

There were some CVS Stores that did not get remodeled when the Longs takeover happened. These were stores CVS was hoping/planning to relocate. It seems like once they decided they were not going to relocate, they went back in a couple years later and did the light remodel with just a wall repaint and aisle hangers and no carpet. Locations around Sacramento that got this treatment were:
Orangevale
Dixon
Marysville (this one actually did relocate)

There is one-that still has the Longs interior to this day:
Rocklin-Stanford Ranch Road

The 2 San Leandro CVS stores had the old Longs Drugs decor until about 2014 even though CVS remodeled the other Longs Drugs to CVS decor in 2009.

I wonder which interior Stanford Ranch has:the Sunrise/Cirby interior(which Rite Aid hasn't touched except for covering Longs logos on the aisle markers)or the last(pre-CVS merger)interior package known as 'Wellness'(not the same as the 2 RAD interior schemes rolled out during the John Standley era).

Believe it or not,CVS has relocated one ex-PayLess unit that Longs acquired the 1999 transaction with Rite Aid:the 1964-era unit at 5285 Prospect Road(Westgate West)in West San Jose, despite getting a proper remodel by CVS in 2009,was replaced a few years back by a new freestanding unit at the corner of Saratoga Avenue and Lawrence Expressway.

Have one closure: Fowler, CA. This is interesting as they sold the prescriptions to a Walgreens in Selma (5 miles away).

Looks like maybe this was an independent that Longs bought out. Pharmacy only type place.

Alpha8472 wrote: December 21st, 2021, 12:16 am CVS is closing at least 6 stores in San Francisco very soon in January 2022. There was only one CVS store in San Francisco in 2009. That was when CVS took over the local chain Longs Drugs. Now there are 17 standalone CVS stores in San Francisco. This does not include the few Target stores in the city. Three stores that are closing are in downtown. These are busy high traffic locations. However, these are also nearby to other CVS stores. All employees will be offered comparable roles at other stores in the city.
As it turned out,one of the 6 January closures in San Francisco happened to be the first(and only)SF Longs Drugs location(2025 Van Ness),and it had barely opened when the acquisition by CVS Health was announced.

The CVS in Madison Heights, Michigan closed as mentioned in another thread. It is near a Sam's Club. Perhaps the Sam's Club pharmacy took too much business away from CVS?

The issue was more the 2 Target CVS locations; one 1/2 mile north and the other 1 mile south/1 mile east. Store has been there for at least 15 years; had good frontage and access; and had a Meijer 1/2 mile east throughout it all. CVS has extensive density in SE Michigan (Rite Aid and CVS are roughly comparable in store count and density; Walgreens is distinctly behind) so aren't losing any business closing this location.
