I’ve always wondered why Aldi doesn’t go into smaller markets like those, they would be an alternative to DG and Family Dollar.

These type markets cannot support a 12-18 sqft Aldi--if a 5k sqft Family Dollar/Dollar General is marginal with two employees, what are you gonna do!?

Except that an Aldi has more groceries (and types of foods) that the other two don't carry (unless the DG is the Market version, but even then probably more).

Someone in a location like that could do actual grocery shopping in Aldi (thus spend far more than picking up a few fill-in items at a FD/DG), which means you wouldn't need as many customers to make it feasible.
