Re: La Jolla Vons to be converted to Pavilions
The Safeway in San Ramon, California somewhat near the old corporate headquarters was converted to the Pavilions decor just recently. The remodeling just finished. It is a Pavilions in everything but name, but there was no grand opening.
It is very nice looking, but since the name is still Safeway, people are not exactly flocking to this store. Traffic has not increased. In fact, it might be less busy than before, but it is probably just due to inflation and high gas prices.

He basically described a 1980's Pavilions. That article is all over the place with inaccuracies.CalItalian wrote: ↑March 29th, 2022, 3:10 pm This was posted yesterday by the website below but I don't think it is correct.

Re: La Jolla Vons to be converted to Pavilions
With the closure of Jonathan's several years ago, that Vons is the only supermarket in La Jolla Village and is always full of some of California's least price-sensitive shoppers. Even Eddie Lampert could make money running that store.
Taking it a bit more upscale is a good idea. What they really need is a bit more space. Given the volume they do, another 7,500sf would be good if they are going to be adding new departments. But that is easier said than done in that location.

Inaccuracies like this is the first store in San Diego. They already have a store in the Carmel Valley neighborhood.steps wrote: ↑March 30th, 2022, 9:53 amHe basically described a 1980's Pavilions. Re: La Jolla Vons to be converted to Pavilions
While I think the La Jolla store would be a good candidate for a higher end Pavilions, that article is over 25 years old. Larry del Santo was COO a long time ago at Vons before Safeway bought it. They had plans to convert 5 or 6 stores in San Diego to Pavilions before Safeway came in and stopped that from happening.

Re: La Jolla Vons to be converted to Pavilions
Pavilions is nothing more than a price hike in bakery/deli departments at this point. 8.99 for deli sandwiches/wraps? Appears most/all of the deli salad case is +$1.00/lb at Pavilions for the exact same stuff Vons has. 1.99 for a single donut? 2.49 for a single muffin/6.99 4pack? 3.99 square cake slice? Some of this bakery stuff does appear to be different than a standard Vons but these prices are just too high and quite a few of their bakery items are the standard Vons stuff (bagels, rolls, french bread, cookies).
Center store, meat, and produce seem to be priced in an identical manner to a standard Vons. There is a new low price program in place which helps some items but overall their pricing is still way out of line compared to Ralphs and Stater on center store. They do seem to be a little more competitive on some meat and produce though. Overall pricing in SoCal seems lower than NorCal.

Re: La Jolla Vons to be converted to Pavilions
This must be some kind of "early" April Fool's joke, as Larry Del Santo hasn't been the CEO of what was The Vons Companies, Inc. since 1997 and he passed away in 2021....or somehow the lajolla.com website re-purposed the article as "new".
https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/la ... d=10564377
The link to the article from Progressive Grocer dates to 1996.
Richard Goodspeed in later years became chairman of what was then Unified Grocers, which itself was acquired by Supervalu who was then acquired by United Natural Foods.
Can you imagine Vons current owner, Albertsons Companies, Inc. and it's overseer, Cerberus adding "labor dollars", and making such a statement during active contract negotiations? The 7 unions collectively would have a field day with that statement at the bargaining table!

Re: La Jolla Vons to be converted to Pavilions
Although I was skeptical of the original story because of the inaccuracies, IT IS CORRECT. The store is going to be converted from Vons to Pavilions. The second Pavilions in San Diego County.

Re: La Jolla Vons to be converted to Pavilions
It happened: https://local.pavilions.com/ca/la-jolla ... d-ave.html
Might be the last Pavilions to open. I expect this store to convert back to Vons, or maybe even the Albertsons banner under SpinCo.
This would perhaps be the nicest Stater Bros. ever assuming they take the store.
