Re: Pricing Snapshot-Smiths-Reno, NV- Thanksgiving vs. Easter
Interesting how much eggs have climbed in price nationally. Just five years ago, I could regularly get a dozen eggs (in SoCal) for less than $1 at any major grocery chain. Now, I’m paying at least $4…

I was still getting eggs around $1 last year. Even this year Smiths ran a digital coupon promotion for 18 Kroger Large Eggs .99 back in February. They ran out and the store substituted 30 count Kroger Medium Eggs for 1.95 (supposedly cost- didn't seem like as good of a deal as 2 18 counts for .99 but was nice to see they at least set up a substitution).
Safeway even did the .99 18 eggs in Reno a couple times late last year with a digital coupon.
Wal Mart finally switched the eggs from the terrible foam cartons to paper cartons. That should help reduce their broken egg losses significantly; those foam cartons are horrible for keeping the eggs in good shape.

Avian flu and residual Covid disruptions may be to blame.

Actually many retailers are blaming egg price increases in regulations and "Cage Free" egg rules that have gone into effect or are about to go into effect in multiple states. Such law is not in effect yet in Nevada (July 2022) but as many stores here supply from CA they already went to all Cage Free (January 2022).
What is interesting is Vitamin Cottage Natural Grocers sells only Cage Free Eggs always has- they market via ads that they are 1.99 per dozen everyday low price. They've had this price now for at least a year, if not longer. Still had it today.
Meanwhile the larger chains like Wal Mart have priced standard dozen large eggs (not cage free) as high as 3.10 in some NV Stores (was below $2 until a couple weeks ago with the bird flu thing) and Kroger is over 2.50 per dozen at all locations for standard dozen large eggs (was also below $2 until a couple weeks ago). Meanwhile Raleys is at 3.48 per dozen for Cage Free Large, Safeway is similar (may be 2.99). I think some retailers are taking advantage.

Of course "they" are gonna blame "regulations".

Though that shouldn't impact the other side of the country (like here in NY) and they have risen here as well (to around $2.99 many places which is quite a bit higher than it was a year or so ago).storewanderer wrote: ↑April 18th, 2022, 6:41 pmActually many retailers are blaming egg price increases in regulations and "Cage Free" egg rules that have gone into effect or are about to go into effect in multiple states. By way of comparison; at Meijer here in Detroit this evening: large cage-free Meijer brand $1.99, large Penny Saver (non-cage free Meijer secondary brand) 1.59 Jumbo Penny Saver 1.89. Almost certain these are regular prices.
