Fry's Electronics Brought Back For The Big Screen

Post by Alpha8472 »

The chain has been brought back from the dead to appear in Jordan Peele's new summer thriller.

In the movie, Fry's Electronics is alive and well and a main character works there. It could be an alternative universe where Fry's Electronics never went out of business or it could just be set in the past. It looks like they actually filmed inside of an actual Fry's Electronics store that was fully stocked. It could be the Burbank store.

I was thinking that it was an alternate universe where Albertsons never took over Lucky and various chains were still open. A strange universe where Lucky is alive and well, Sears is still a great place to shop at, Fry's Electronics is doing well, and we still had all of those regional department stores instead of just Macy's. We would also have plenty of bustling malls filled with all of those stores that made the mall a fun place to spend time. There would also be plenty of video rental stores.

For the movie Nope: the director fixed up the abandoned Fry's store and made it look like a working store again.

One of the former Fry's stores in the Houston area has been leased by Axiom Space to house the company's engineering operations. This particular space-themed Fry's location was notable for being home to a full-size replica of the International Space Station, which makes it ideal for Axiom as they are building modules for the ISS with eventual plans to build a commercial space station of their own.

The International Space Station will only be in service until 2024. A new space station will definitely be needed.

Randy Fry, the founder of Fry's, appears in the movie along with his news anchor wife Viki Liviakis. It took 3 weeks to restock the Fry's store and install new cash registers for filming.

Current plans call for operating the ISS until 2030 and deorbiting it some time in 2031. It seems likely that another space station in some form would be at least partially operational by then, either NASA or commercial. Russia plans to build their own space station by 2030 (Given the current problems with Roscosmos it remains to be seen if that will happen or not,) and China's space station (Tiangong) is in progress now.

Russia says it is pulling out of the ISS after 2024. Without Russia, the ISS could be in danger. A Russian spacecraft is needed to boost the station and keep it from falling out of orbit. It is a monumental task that other spacecraft currently cannot do. Russia will also unbolt its modules and use them for its own Russian space station.

Hopefully, this new company setting up shop inside of an old Fry's store can do something. However, I doubt it.

In spite of the news NASA had been informed that Russia will continue to be involved in ISS until 2028, near the end of its life anyway. Also, Starliner has the capability to boost the orbit of the station (assuming Boeing can get their act together, but that's a topic for another board) so there would be ways around that as well. Too soon to tell what will happen there, but I suspect NASA will find ways to operate the ISS without the Russians, if for no other reason than to spite them.
