WinCo marketing in eastern Idaho

Post by SamSpade »

From a full-page newspaper ad in the two larger cities in eastern Idaho (also where WinCo is located):

New competition in Idaho Falls - Ammon with Grocery Outlet, Pocatello is a bit tighter with only one Albertsons left and it is not near WinCo, Fred Meyer, or Walmart. Smith's is in Chubbuck.

Not sure why they skipped Albertsons.
Let's see how Safeway NorCal would do: this is based on Reno pricing, it is on a lower scale on some items (from looking at this list- not many items...)

Total of items sold there- Reno pricing: 163.82 (includes 2 items not sold there- for fairness let's just count those at the lowest price on the list

Total entire list: +2.98+1.78 (for items not carried) - Reno pricing= 168.58

Total before sale prices - Reno pricing: 186.21

These totals say a lot. Smiths comes out competitive with Wal Mart on straight card pricing (no digital coupons, minimum quantity purchases, etc.). Fred Meyer is much higher. This explains why Smiths got shown the door in Idaho Falls in favor of the more expensive Fred Meyer. It makes much higher margins for Kroger to run as Fred Meyer than Smiths.

Interesting that they aren't showing copies of the actual receipts as they did in the past.

I would expect the receipts are on display on the carts they display in the store.
That is how they've done it the past couple times in Reno.

I think these comparisons don't mean much but I had fun taking their list and looking at other stores/regions for the items.

They were at the bottom of the ad. I just clipped this portion for readability / board posting.

I'm also trying to work on some comparison data, but have been fortunate enough to have family in town and post-covid era finally able to go out and about a bit?!? :D

The only one I could fill in so far was Walmart, which came in at $166.53 in this market (I had to fill in the enchilada sauce price like StoreWander did for a few items).

Well, like Reno Safeway, the Portland division came out about the same.
QFC came out a bit cheaper, which is just shocking. Of course, this included sale/card required pricing at both stores. I did not total non sale prices in my survey.

Amazing about QFC, must have had the right specials running...

Safeway's pricing is unbelievably high.
