Universal CityWalk Adds Curfew

Post by Alpha8472 »

Universal Studios Orlando has enacted a curfew for people under 18. People under 18 are required to depart by 9 PM unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian, are staying at a Universal Hotel(need a hotel key card), or seeing a movie Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays.

This is due to the entire shopping and dining area being evacuated due to fighting and a shooting scare. If you are under 18 and you already have a movie ticket you have to be escorted by security to the movie theater. If you are under 18 you will not be allowed to go to the theater to buy a ticket. At 9 PM, security will escort everyone under 18 out of CityWalk.

This is a pretty popular concept at the time and effective if actually enforced.

Knott’s Berry Farm in Southern California recently enacted a similar policy and has seen incidents drop substantially. They expanded it based on the success.

The problem with this policy is that it is difficult for 99% of places to enforce. Theme parks and affiliated properties (CityWalk, Disney Springs, etc) in Orlando have limited entry and airport style security. Malls on the other hand, for the most part do not (I’ve only ever seen anything resembling this in Atlanta and Vegas). It would be difficult for a mall to enforce age requirements with so many entries/exits and relatively limited security.

I don't see how they will enforce this without a huge army of security. Maybe in Orlando the employment market is different than it is in the West and Intermountain regions of the United States and they have a lot of security people they can route.

But it is important for them to get control over incidents, somehow. The folks who start these incidents often do not spend much money at the complex but they will sure cause a lot of other customers to not spend money there. They will also deter potential employees from wanting to work in the complex.

Universal Orlando already has a security checkpoint to screen visitors before they can enter CityWalk. The cinema is very close to the checkpoint. Overall, it seems manageable if it is only done Friday through Sunday.
