There were full Nordstrom stores in San Bernardino (Montclair Plaza) and Riverside (Galleria at Tyler) counties until a few years ago.

The real estate bust around 2008 ruined that PLUS................there just isn't enough "seasonal business" to sustain a FULL service store.

The Coachella Valley is not a retail paradise by any measure. Most retailers experience low average store volumes in comparison to other areas.

Even Paseo Drive is a retail joke even though it likes to claim to be the Rodeo Drive of the desert.
But does Macy's step things up in that market? Palm Desert was one they've put some money into recently...

Almost would argue situation is better in El Centro since it has Dillards.
IMO.....................they have done nothing to step things up with that location. The merchandise mix is notably inferior to other upper tier Macy's.

We've only visited the home/furniture department at Palm Desert so don't know what the rest of the store is like. The mall management seems quite sketchy (they forced out a local independent record/media store which had hung on through Covid on a flimsy premise). We'll stroll through El Paseo now and then (they host a rather fun periodic car show on Thursdays) but anything other than big box waits till we head over to LA.
