Home Depot Operations

Post by Alpha8472 »

Home Depot is pulling out of plans to build a new store in Oakland, California. The shopping center used to house a Safeway. Safeway moved and the empty lot has been empty for 5 years.

Why would they open another store in Oakland? There is already a huge Home Depot in a former Super Kmart in Oakland. That one is being taken advantage of day and night by shoplifters.

Rockridge is not a bad part of Oakland. I've walked around that area multiple times (always in daylight); no issues. Generally feels safe. I almost wonder if this store opening there would have brought more problems to the area. I think it is a good thing Home Depot abandoned plans for this store. This strikes me as a very poor fit for the area.

Recall this had a very large Payless/Longs before, and that store had significant garden/hardware products. When the shopping center redeveloped that store went away. So there is probably a fit for a mid sized neighborhood style hardware store with garden at this shopping center, but not a big box.
