San Francisco is facing a huge deficit due to tons of stores closing due to retail theft. The politicians in charge are panicking as they fear they will not only be in debt but also will get voted out at the next election.

The city needs to fight the retail theft because it is affecting everything. Companies are closing their offices due to crime and retail theft. Those companies are moving to other safer cities. San Francisco will be a ghost town if the city doesn't stop the companies from fleeing. Condominiums are not selling due to fear from citizens about retail theft and crime.

This crackdown on crime is a good start and it will more than pay for itself if businesses stop leaving the city.

San Francisco already has started prosecuting drug dealers and drug crimes. They have started cleaning up the streets and deploying people to keep order. People have done YouTube videos and the streets are much cleaner and safer than what it was over a year ago. The homeless encampments have been greatly reduced and have moved out of the retail and tourist areas.

The planned drug addict drug consumption facilities have been canceled. The city was going to open facilities to let drug addicts use drugs, but the city changed its mind. Now the drug addicts are going to think twice before flocking to the city. Using drugs out in the open is not going to be tolerated in the city anymore.

The other problem is San Francisco continues to be a ghost town from office workers not returning to offices. New York Times even had an article about that last week.

Retailers in San Francisco are facing a lot of issues. Fewer people in the city, office workers not returning, tech layoffs and finance layoffs in progress/coming (Twitter, Goldman Sachs, etc.) which will only hurt office traffic further, and these theft increases. It appears the city is finally realizing either they increase police support to the retailers, or additional retailers will close. There will come a tipping point where enough retailers close that the remaining retailers who stay no longer have enough traffic then they will end up closing too.

We will see if the crackdown is a true long term commitment, or just a temporary attempt to put a band aid onto a wet arm.

We will also see how many retailers, if any, announce store closures in San Francisco in January.
