Walmart 2023 Closings
Georgia:
1801 Howell Mill Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30318
This location is closing due to a fire set during a shoplifting attempt.
Illinois:
17550 S Halsted St, Homewood, IL 60430
The online chatter is that this store is closing due to shrink / theft. It is a former Super Kmart.
12690 Illinois Rte 59, Plainfield, IL 60585
This appears to be a case where Walmart is overstored with several nearby supercenters and the overall trade area of this store is saturated with a Target across the street and a Meijer within a mile. It had a "grand re-opening" after a renovation within the last year.
6840 N McCormick Blvd, Lincolnwood, IL 60712
This is a former Dominick's that became a "pickup only" Walmart. Due to the fact that it is a "one off" format it was probably doomed from day 1 as Walmart always kills off these experimental stores within a few years.
New Mexico:
301 San Mateo Blvd SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108
This appears to be a very recently renovated store but appears to be closing due to shrink / theft.
Wisconsin:
10330 W Silver Spring Dr, Milwaukee, WI 53225
This store appears to be located in rather sad area for retail (a bit of an industrial area) and the overall vibe feels like the Oakland store which was closed a few years ago. It is at the far end of a parking lot adjacent to a building that almost assuredly was a 1970s era Kmart and then it became a Pick n' Save supermarket which closed in 2017. I'm assuming shrink / theft played a role here.

Re: Walmart 2023 Closings
Did these closing Walmart stores have aisles locked up in glass cabinets and armed guards in body armor?
The totally locked down Walmart stores seemed to be managing shoplifting better.
There should be a middle ground that could allow these stores to still be profitable but deflect the shoplifters.

Re: Walmart 2023 Closings
I can see why this store failing: affluent demographics nearby, and I can imagine Meijer is giving them a run for their money. If I were a price-sensitive shopper in that region, why would I go to Walmart when Meijer has competitive pricing and better quality?arizonaguy wrote: ↑February 9th, 2023, 12:49 pm

I don't know whether it has items locked behind glass but the Albuquerque Walmart is in an area known as the war zone.Alpha8472 wrote: ↑February 9th, 2023, 7:59 pm Did these closing Walmart stores have aisles locked up in glass cabinets and armed guards in body armor?

Re: Walmart 2023 Closings
I find it VERY strange that multiple of these stores appear to have had interior remodels in 2022.
I am very curious what happened. The interior remodels Wal Mart did in Sparks and Carson City during 2022 were slow and highly disruptive (but not as bad as the Reno Target remodel that took almost a year and since the remodel they can't seem to figure out how to stock the shelves in the store). Wal Mart also did MASSIVE markdowns in these remodeling stores of various inventory to get rid of. Also due to what seemed to be system glitches, many new items Wal Mart brought into the remodeled stores would show up on the planogram and get shelf tagged (and scan) at .25, .50, 1.00- items that were regularly as much as $20 and there seemed to be a high concentration of these items in HBA/drug and toys. It took them months but they finally fixed the pricing on those items, customers caught on quickly and would buy those items since they were such a great deal and they scanned at the very low prices.
I wonder if some of these stores lost so much money remodeling (between markdowns, discovering how much shrink they were having, and then the screw ups on the price feed on new items) that they ended up closing due to those circumstances.

Re: Walmart 2023 Closings
The Albuquerque store was just remodeled and downsized. They actually built an interior wall and relocated the pharmacy back to the hardlines entrance during the remodel. The store had lots of merchandise behind glass and had much of HBA in a cage with a single entrance and exit. The store had security present, frequent bait cars in the parking lot, and had also installed the one way entrance and exit gates. During the recent remodel the store got self checkout for the first time.

Re: Walmart 2023 Closings
There's one more closing I missed
6900 US Hwy 19 N, Pinellas Park, FL 33781
This is a Neighborhood Market within 1/2 mile of a supercenter. Based upon Google Street View this Neighborhood Market still has the pre-2008 Walmart signage and the original interior. The nearby supercenter looks to have been recently renovated.

Re: Walmart 2023 Closings
Wonder if some of the close-by capacity-building Neighborhood Markets are on the chopping block, as they were doubtless set up before pickup became such a thing. Just adding more empty 45k sqft boxes out there.

Re: Walmart 2023 Closings
Those Neighborhood Markets were built with the intention of capturing market share / grocery dollars from customers who would never set foot into a supercenter. Walmart has found that it can utilize Walmart+ / pickup to serve essentially the same customers without having to have a separate physical location.

Re: Walmart 2023 Closings
Figured it's time to add some more closings:
Oregon
Portland, Oregon. 1123 N. Hayden Meadows Drive
Portland, Oregon. 4200 SE 82nd Avenue
District of Colombia
99 H St NW, Washington, DC 20001
This appears to be a 73,000 square foot neighborhood market / limited GM combination store. It appears shoplifting and COVID / WFH probably did this store in. As this store opened in 2013 it appears it could've been on a 10 year lease that Walmart is choosing to not renew.
