They have a couple states/regions (not sure how they are internally split up) where they moved candy, some canned foods, and some other random items back down to $1. I think it is near their HQ.

I noticed the $1.50 sign about helium balloons also.

They are walking a fine line when it comes to pricing. There was something to be said for a store where "everything was $1 (or 1.25 or 1.10 or 1.50 or whatever) or less." And with how the stores are run, scan integrity is going to be a disaster.

They also have an endcap of Gift Card Mall Blackhawk prepaid cards now. Can only imagine the Dollar Tree cash register activating a prepaid card. It probably dials out and takes 90 seconds.

Why is retail so bad in Reno and Sparks? ... is it because folks that have some staying power and brain power can go get a job at a unionized casino and make the same or better money ... a regular, expected schedule... something else?

I don't go to Dollar Tree very often, but can't recall seeing any $1 items the last time I was at one of the nearby locations. I have seen some $1 items reappear at local Dollar General stores, but I am there rarely enough that I can't tell if those were always $1 or if they reverted.

At least here, Dollar General has an entire side of one aisle with $1 items. They always had such a spot, it moved during a renovation to add more cold/frozen but if anything looks a bit bigger now.

Not so sure on any $1 items at Dollar Tree (yet), other than a couple things they left (like greeting cards at $1 and 2/$1).

Actually only one casino has unionized employees in Reno and it is a culinary union only, not even all of the employees in that casino. Casino employment has been declining for decades in this market. Downtown Reno is a sad shadow of what it once was. A couple perimeter casinos do well and that is about it.

The warehouses seem to be the main culprit that cause retail to have issues attracting employees. But there are various retailers around Reno that are staffed just fine; go to Costco, Trader Joe's, Home Depot, and you will not know anything is wrong/it is difficult to find employees as they are fully staffed and always have been. I think the casinos put pressure on fast food for exactly the reasons you describe: a regular, expected schedule; full time employment; actual real benefits.
