Krispy Kreme Kiosks at Walmart

Post by Alpha8472 »

My local Walmart just added a Krispy Kreme kiosk to complement the existing display of boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts.

This lighted cabinet sells single serve donuts. The price is $2.58 a piece. A dozen sealed boxed donuts is about $19.98.

It looks nice, but it is expensive.

Krispy Kreme seems like they really want to focus on non-restaurant sales.

2.58 EACH?

I guess not many people need to buy them to make this worthwhile.

Putting something like this with that price point in your store really sort of makes you look like a ripoff store.

These were under $1 back before 2008 at various gas stations, Albertsons, etc. who had these single KK in their location.
There is no justification for these things going up this much in price.

I think Krispy Kreme is testing out the high prices at first. Once they realize that very few people are buying them, they will reduce the price.

I suppose the dumpster at the nearest Krispy Kreme will be overflowing very soon.

Some Safeway stores in the San Francisco Bay Area sell single donuts for $2.99.

I can't get information on the profit split on this but I did learn some things. Reportedly the KK delivery driver is in charge of almost everything to do with this case- cleaning it, stocking it, removing old product, stocking supplies. They enter through the front door with product (Wal Mart doesn't even check them in like a normal DSD vendor). Supposedly the Wal Mart bakery is supposed to "keep up" the case like clear old trays (the old trays are supposed to go in the bottom of the case, then taken back by Krispy Kreme with the delivery) or face the donuts but that is it. It is just there, almost like a tenant.

It just doesn't look right to see Wal Mart the supposed "discount store" charging 2.58 PER DONUT. The Terrible Herbst convenience store chain in NV has Krispy Kreme singles in all of their units and they were at 1.89 each (they were 0.99 each back in 2008 or whenever) and only recently price increased up to 2.19. That is still too much... but seems to be a bargain for Krispy Kreme.

That's what really hurt them back in the mid-2000s, between gas stations and grocery stores...it wasn't a good product by the time it got to those places.

Maybe if they actually set up a Krispy Kreme unit inside those sorts of locations, but I'm coming up on a blank on even any gas station co-brands.

They completely lost their quality reputation by the "quality" of the product after it sat in these places. It was delivered fresh "daily" but they are getting more than a few days of shelf life out of these donuts now.

There is the Amazon Fresh Co-Brand in Schamburg, IL but I don't think it produces donuts but it has a staffed counter, Krispy Kreme cash registers, Krispy Kreme employees, and presents like a tenant (not sure if it is a tenant or what). A couple Las Vegas casinos have franchise Krispy Kremes inside that have the donut making equipment and everything.
